Gavin and Stacey
I have just finished watching the first of the hit TV series ‘Gavin & Stacey’ from the BBC which features our town Barry as one of its locations. What great publicity for the town.
In case you haven’t seen (or heard ) of it ‘Gavin & Stacey’ is a modern romantic comedy series featuring the acting talents of Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Joanna Page and Matthew Horne, supurbly written by James Corden and Ruth Jones.
Gavin, from Billericay in Essex finally meets Stacey from Barry after a long telephone relationship at work. Stacey travels up to London to meet Gavin face to face, they fall in love and develop a long distance relationship with frequent visits to each others home town. During the series we are introduced to an interesting parade of characters and the hometown of Stacey - Barry.

Though some of the characters are stereotypically Welsh which is slightly annoying if you came from Barry, the town itself features well. Limited places are shown but what there is of Barry looks good on screen - they don’t dwell on the run-down element and Barry Island actually looks stunning. They could have made it appear so much worse. The series is built upon the strength and depth of the characters who appear in it both funny and complicated at the same time.I caught a glimpse of the film crew recently at work on the second series down at Barry Station, so I hope that they keep up the good work and Barry gets some good coverage from it. The writers and producers deserve all the accolades they are currently receiving - if you haven’t seen it yet, go and buy a copy on DVD, its great.
